I believe Chutaro-san is in advanced years but unless there is an apprentice who has taken over his forge he is still doing some very impressive work. The set of chu-tataki I received are very near performance ready as I received them. The backs are so close to working its unreal. The weld line and wrap of the cutting steel is as perfect as can can be expected given handmade products. The ura are very, very well formed. On top of all of that the finish work on all of the chisels is to my eye perfect. This skillful work only comes from a love of your craft.
I also have always liked that this blacksmith is one who no matter how small the size he makes them all mentori style with beveled sides. Purely aesthetic but I like that style over the square sided style. I forget what theyre called.
I am very pleased with my only Fujihiro chisel purchase.

To be honest, I was totally intimated when I opened the box of chisels and knew there were a few hours of prep before I could use them. I’ve only manage to prep some of the handles and have yet to begin sharpening them which will be another nerve racking lesson but you have to start somewhere! Easy ordering and quick delivery by FedEx. An exciting journey into working with hand tools.

The Fujihiro chu-tataki chisel set is very, very nice and the Tsunesaburo kanna is just as nice. The 65mm chipbreaker is great, and just what I ordered, although, I ordered the wrong size but it is exactly what I ordered. My mistake.
