Wrought Iron from the Mid-Meiji Period
This wrought iron was imported from the United Kingdom before 1887 (Meiji 20) and used in old Japanese National Railway iron bridges. It is a rare material forged while retaining the original rivet holes from the bridge structure. Soft, easy to sharpen, and with natural porosity that prevents sharpening stones from clogging, this is a scarce type of iron that can no longer be produced today.

Steel from the Mid-Showa Period
This is Blue Paper Steel No.1 produced about fifty years ago using charcoal reduction. Two-sun-thick steel is forged, elongated, and forge-welded. It sharpens easily, has an excellent luster, and holds an edge for a long time—well-balanced steel ideal for planing softwoods such as hinoki (Japanese cypress) and sugi (Japanese cedar).

Special Specifications
Taking advantage of the characteristics of the mid-Meiji wrought iron, a wood-grain finish is applied. You can choose between two types: one that requires no ura-dashi (back-hollowing) and one that requires ura-dashi.
